In 1966, Grace Hopper retired from the Naval Reserve for the first time. She had been a commissioned officer in the United States Navy since 1943, and had served in a variety of roles, including as a computer programmer and mathematician. After her retirement, she continued to work in the computer industry, and was a pioneer in the development of computer programming languages.
