Prior to joining the Navy, Grace Hopper was a professor of Mathematics at Vassar College. She was one of the first women to earn a doctorate in mathematics, and she was a pioneer in the field of computer science. During her time at Vassar, she developed a number of important mathematical concepts, including the compiler, which is a program that translates human-readable code into machine code.
