Potter played for 13 years in the Football League. He made his debut in 1955 for Bradford Park Avenue, and played a total of 505 league games for six clubs. He was a key player for York City, where he made over 300 league appearances, and helped the club to win the Third Division North title in 1963–64. He also played for Leeds United, Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield Town and Rochdale.
