1st Earl of Essex was the title held by Gregory Cromwell's father, Thomas Cromwell. Thomas Cromwell was a prominent figure in English politics during the reign of Henry VIII. He served as Lord Chancellor and was a key advisor to the king. In 1539, he was created Earl of Essex, a title that he held until his execution in 1540.
