Boniface IX, elected in 1389, preceded Gregory XII as Pope. He is remembered for the end of the Great Western Schism, during which there were two or even three rival claimants to the papacy. Gregory XII was elected in 1406 after the death of Innocent VII, and his reign marked a significant turning point in the resolution of the schism.
