Opposed. Pope Gregory XIII firmly opposed Protestantism and took measures to suppress its spread. He issued the papal bull "Regnans in Excelsis" in 1570, which excommunicated Queen Elizabeth I of England and declared her subjects released from their allegiance to her. Gregory also supported the Catholic League in France during the French Wars of Religion and established the Congregation of the Index to censor and ban Protestant literature.
