In 1967, the Bundesmarine, the navy of West Germany, honored the memory of Admiral Günther Lütjens by naming a destroyer after him. Lütjens had been the commander of the German battleship Bismarck during World War II and had died in action in 1941. The destroyer Lütjens served in the Bundesmarine until 1994, when it was decommissioned and sold to the Turkish Navy.
