The answer is Soviet opposition. Luftwaffe Generalmajor Günther Rall, the highest-scoring German ace of World War II, claimed 275 aerial victories. During the war, Rall served on the Eastern Front and claimed most of his victories against Soviet pilots. He also claimed two victories in the Battle of France and one in the Battle of Britain.
