In 1944, Field Marshal Günther von Kluge took command of the German forces on the Western Front. He was tasked with defending against the Allied invasion of Normandy, but he was unable to prevent the Allies from breaking out of their beachheads and advancing inland. In August, Kluge was dismissed from command and replaced by Field Marshal Walter Model.
