Gus Grissom trained as a USAF test pilot before becoming an astronaut. He was a member of the Mercury Seven, the first group of American astronauts selected by NASA. He was the second American to go into space, and the first American to make a spacewalk. He died in the Apollo 1 fire in 1967.
