Gustaf VI Adolf passed away on 15 September 1973, at the age of 90. He had been King of Sweden since 1950, and had previously served as Crown Prince from 1907 to 1950. He was the oldest monarch in Swedish history, and the last to be born before the introduction of universal suffrage in Sweden in 1921.
