Charles IX of Sweden died in 1611, leaving the throne to his son Gustavus Adolphus. Gustavus inherited three wars from his father: the Kalmar War, the Polish War and the Thirty Years' War. The Kalmar War was a conflict between Sweden and Denmark over control of the Kalmar Union. The Polish War was a conflict between Sweden and Poland over control of Livonia.
