Christina of Sweden succeeded her father, King Gustavus Adolphus, as monarch in 1632. She was only six years old at the time, so the Swedish Riksdag established a regency council to rule on her behalf. Christina became the first female sovereign of Sweden and was known for her intelligence, beauty, and love of the arts. She ruled for 22 years, until her abdication in 1654.
