King Gyanendra was briefly king as a child when his grandfather King Mahendra died in 1972. He was only nine years old at the time and was not considered to be ready to rule. As a result, his uncle King Birendra was appointed regent. Birendra ruled Nepal until he was assassinated in 2001. After Birendra's death, Gyanendra was once again crowned king.
