Hans-Ulrich Rudel was a German Luftwaffe ace and flying ace during World War II. He was the most successful ground-attack pilot in history, credited with destroying more than 2,500 Soviet tanks. In 1945, Rudel was shot down and captured by US forces. He was held prisoner until 1949, when he was released.
