After becoming Prime Minister of Malawi in 1966, Hastings Kamuzu Banda ruled the country with an iron fist for 30 years. In 1971, he declared himself President for Life of Malawi, a title he held until his death in 1997. During his time in power, Banda oversaw a period of political repression and economic stagnation.
