Swan is the middle name of Henrietta Swan Leavitt. She was an American astronomer who discovered the period-luminosity relationship for Cepheid variables, which led to the discovery of the expansion of the universe. She was the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from Radcliffe College, and the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
