Campbell-Bannerman served as Leader of the Liberal Party from 1900 to 1908. He was the first Liberal to hold this position since William Gladstone retired in 1894. Campbell-Bannerman was a strong supporter of social reform and imperialism, and he led the Liberal Party to victory in the 1906 general election. He died in office in 1908, and was succeeded by Herbert Henry Asquith.
