Henry Hudson sailed on the modern Hudson River in 1609. He was an English explorer who was hired by the Dutch East India Company to find a new route to the East Indies. Hudson sailed up the Hudson River in his ship, the Half Moon, and eventually reached what is now Albany, New York. He was the first European to explore the Hudson River and the surrounding area.
