Henry II was crowned as Holy Roman Emperor in 1014. He was the son of Duke Conrad II of Lorraine and Gisela of Swabia. He was elected king of the Germans in 1002 and crowned emperor in 1014. He was a strong ruler and expanded the empire to include northern Italy. He was also a patron of the arts and literature.
