Henry IV of Germany undertook a walk to Canossa in January 1077 in an attempt to get Pope Gregory VII to lift the excommunication that had been placed on him. The walk was a humiliating experience for Henry, who was forced to walk barefoot in the snow for three days before Gregory would see him.
