Hephaestion was a Macedonian, a member of the Argead dynasty, which ruled the Kingdom of Macedon from 808 to 316 BC. He was a close friend and confidant of Alexander the Great, and after Alexander's death in 323 BC, Hephaestion became regent of the empire. He died suddenly in 324 BC, and Alexander was devastated by his loss.
