Hernando de Soto was a Spanish explorer who led the first European expedition into the interior of North America. In 1539, he landed in Florida with a fleet of three ships and approximately 600 men. After spending the winter in Florida, de Soto and his men began their journey north. They crossed the Mississippi River and traveled through the southeastern United States, reaching the Appalachian Mountains in 1540.
