Itō Hirobumi was born in 1841 in the Chōshū Domain of Japan. He was a samurai who played a major role in the Meiji Restoration, which brought an end to the shogunate and established the Empire of Japan. He served as the first Prime Minister of Japan from 1885 to 1888.
