Itō Hirobumi was the first Prime Minister of Japan and the founder of the Meiji Constitution. He was assassinated in Harbin, Manchuria, on 26 October 1909 by Korean nationalist An Chung-gŭn. The assassination was motivated by An's desire to avenge the Japanese colonization of Korea.
