Itō Hirobumi (1841–1909) was the first Prime Minister of Japan, serving from 1885 to 1888 and again from 1892 to 1896. He was a key figure in the Meiji Restoration, which saw the end of the feudal Tokugawa shogunate and the establishment of a modern constitutional monarchy. As Prime Minister, Itō oversaw the drafting of the Meiji Constitution and the establishment of a Western-style government.
