The Battle of Isandlwana was a major battle during the Anglo-Zulu War. It took place on 22 January 1879, between the British Army and the Zulu Empire. The British force, led by Lord Chelmsford, was ambushed and defeated by the Zulus, who killed over 1,300 British soldiers. Smith-Dorrien was a young officer at the time of the battle, and he was one of the few British survivors.
