Hua Guofeng was elevated to the national stage in the early 1970s, when he became a member of the Communist Party of China's Politburo. He rose to power in 1976 after the death of Mao Zedong, and became premier of China in 1978. Hua was a conservative, and his policies were opposed by the more liberal Deng Xiaoping.
