Hua Guofeng was appointed as Vice Premier in January 1975, at a time when Mao Zedong was still in power and the Cultural Revolution was still ongoing. He was a close ally of Mao and was seen as his successor. After Mao's death in 1976, Hua became the paramount leader of China and presided over the end of the Cultural Revolution.
