Hua Guofeng succeeded Mao Zedong as Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party in 1976. Mao had been in declining health for several years, and his death in September of that year left a power vacuum in the party. Hua was a close ally of Mao, and he was chosen to succeed him by the party's Politburo.
