Justice Hugo Black opposed the doctrine of substantive due process, which held that the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment allowed the Supreme Court to invalidate laws that it found to be unreasonable or arbitrary. Black believed that this doctrine gave the Supreme Court too much power and that it should be limited to protecting only those rights that were explicitly mentioned in the Constitution.
