Ilan Ramon was a fighter pilot in the Israeli Air Force before becoming an astronaut. He flew over 100 missions and was awarded numerous medals for his bravery and skill. Ramon was chosen to be an astronaut in 1998 and was the first Israeli to go into space. He died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003.
