Allende was granted United States citizenship in 1993, 14 years after his death. He had fled Chile in 1973 after the military coup that overthrew his government and killed thousands of his supporters. Allende lived in exile in Mexico for three years before moving to the United States in 1976. He died of a heart attack in 1979.
