Edward II attempted to take revenge on the barons. After the barons revolted against him in 1322, he executed some of them and imprisoned others. In 1326, Edward's wife, Isabella, and her lover Roger Mortimer returned to England from exile and deposed him. Edward was imprisoned in Berkeley Castle and died there under mysterious circumstances.
