Akira Kurosawa persuaded Ishirō Honda to come out of retirement to direct the 1977 film The War in Space. Honda had previously retired from directing in 1963 after the release of Atragon. Kurosawa felt that Honda was the only director who could do justice to the film's script, which he had written with fellow filmmaker Toshio Masuda.
