Ivan Bagramyan was born in Karakilise, Ottoman Empire, in 1897. Karakilise was a town in the Russian Empire that is now known as Gyumri, Armenia. Bagramyan was a Soviet military commander who fought in World War II. He was the first Soviet general to receive the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union. He died in 1982 in Yerevan, Armenia.
