The emperor himself would traditionally choose the Emperor's regnal name in Lij Iyasu's time. This was because the emperor was considered to be the supreme authority in the country and had the final say on all matters, including the choice of his own name. This tradition continued until the fall of the Ethiopian monarchy in 1974.
