Lij Iyasu was born in 1895. He was the son of Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul, and was the heir apparent to the throne of Ethiopia. Lij Iyasu was a devout Muslim, and this caused tension with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. He was also accused of being sympathetic to the Italians, who were the colonial power in Eritrea and Somaliland.
