Jack Lynch retired from his position as a TD in 1981. This was after he had served as Taoiseach for 16 years, the longest serving Taoiseach in Irish history. He was also the leader of Fianna Fáil for 19 years. After retiring from politics, Lynch became a member of the Council of State. He died in 1999 at the age of 82.
