Explorer 1 was a satellite that was launched on January 31, 1958, by the United States. It was the first American satellite to be launched into orbit and the second artificial satellite to orbit the Earth, after the Soviet Union's Sputnik 1. The Explorer 1 was launched as part of the International Geophysical Year and carried instruments to measure the Earth's magnetic field and radiation belts.
