The Texas Revolution began in 1835 when Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna abolished the Mexican Constitution of 1824, which had allowed for a great deal of autonomy for the Mexican states. The Texans, who had already been chafing under Mexican rule, took up arms against Santa Anna and declared independence in 1836.
