James Larkin died in 1947, aged 66. He had been a prominent figure in the Irish labour movement since the early 20th century, and had been involved in a number of major strikes and protests. He was also a founder of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union (ITGWU), which became one of the largest unions in Ireland.
