Jan Železný retired from javelin throwing at the age of 40 in 2006. He had been a dominant force in the sport for many years, winning the Olympic gold medal in 1992, 1996 and 2000, as well as the World Championships in 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2001. He set the world record in 1996 with a throw of 98.48 metres, which stood for 10 years.
