He is a Czech javelin thrower, who won gold medals at the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics, as well as at the 1993, 1995 and 1997 World Championships. He set the world record in the javelin throw, 98.48 metres, on 25 May 1996 in Jena, East Germany. Železný is considered one of the greatest javelin throwers of all time.
