He won the gold medal in the javelin throw event at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, with a throw of 94.58 meters. Železný's throw broke the previous Olympic record of 92.80 meters, set by Soviet javelin thrower Aleksandr Baryshnikov in 1980.
