Jenny Shipley was first appointed to cabinet under the leadership of Jim Bolger. She was first elected to parliament in 1987 and served as a minister in a number of portfolios, including health, social welfare, and education. In 1996, she became the first female prime minister of New Zealand. She served in this role until 1999, when she was defeated by Helen Clark.
