Before she entered politics, Jenny Shipley was a primary school teacher in Papatoetoe, New Zealand. She worked there from 1971 to 1984, and taught a range of subjects including English, mathematics, social studies, and music. After leaving teaching, Shipley became involved in politics, and was elected to Parliament in 1987. She served as Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1997 to 1999.
