Prior to becoming Prime Minister, Clark was the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. He served as the leader of the party from 1976 to 1983, and as Prime Minister of Canada from 1979 to 1980. Clark was the first Progressive Conservative leader to win a majority government since 1958, and the first to be elected from the province of British Columbia.
