John Barbirolli was born in England to Italian parents. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and went on to have a successful career as a conductor. He was particularly known for his work with the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester and the New York Philharmonic. Barbirolli was knighted in 1948 and died in 1970.
