Answer
John Clipperton was a British privateer who raided Spanish and Portuguese ships in the Pacific Ocean during the War of the Spanish Succession. He captured the Spanish Manila galleon Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación y Desengaño in 1719, which was the richest prize ever taken by a privateer. Clipperton died in 1722 after his ship was wrecked on an island in the Pacific Ocean.
